It looks like the media is actually seeing who is responsible for the government shut down, Democrats. They intentionally didn’t make a deal to extend the government budget in an attempt to secure more rights for illegal immigrants.
“U.S. Shutdown Starts as Senate Democrats Block GOP Funding Plan” a Bloomberg headline blared early Saturday morning, in reference to the Senate’s inability to agree on a variety of budgetary issues. The New York Times and AP posted similar headlines and stories.
Both parties took risks in the negotiations. Republicans refused to bend to the Democrat’s demands to negotiate over DACA, and the Democrats refused to talk about a government budget, which effectively shuts the government down temporarily.
Media outlets, meanwhile, painted the issue in harsh tones for the Democrats — one NYT headline declared: “Senate Democrat Block Bill to Keep Government Open Past Midnight, Shutdown Looms,” while the AP simply noted that, “Senate Democrats derail bill to avert shutdown.”
Republicans did they could to entire Democrats to come to a solution, they even offered Democrats an extension to the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, as well as the delay of some unpopular health-care taxes.
Republicans tried to work with the Democrats, but Democrats are asking for too much in exchange for just working out a government budget. They want rights for millions of illegal immigrants to be able to stay in this country, and in exchange, they were willing to negotiate on a government budget.
They should have negotiated on a government budget, then work on securing DACA for their supporters. Instead, they tried to hold the government hostage in an attempt to get Republicans to talk, but Republicans called their bluff and now Democrats are stuck looking dumb for basically calling for an end to the government.
